Students in Mrs. VanHook's 4th Grade Social Studies are learning about Economics. Students participated in a coal mining activity where they were given a budget, and were asked to determine if they made a profit or a loss at the end of the activity. The activity was a review of specialization, human resources, capital resources, natural resources as well as being an entrepreneur. Students had a chance to make a lot of money or take a huge loss as a coal miner, depending on their decisions along the way.

STEAM education (science, technology, engineering, art and math) exposes students to high-tech fields of study. Each students was able to visit various stations exploring engineering concepts, 3D printing, programmable humanoid robots, and science concepts such as Newton’s Third Law of Motion.
East Bernstadt students explore the STEAM museum.
East Bernstadt sixth graders had the opportunity to go to the Laurel County Public Library, where they were able to listen to a stringed quartet play various genres of music.
6th grade field trip
The East Bernstadt Middle School students were challenged to provide Easter surprises for forty-seven other younger children who would otherwise not receive Easter baskets. They, with the help of the community, met this challenge. They gave from their hearts and ensured that these students would have a very Happy Easter.

Community Outreach 2016 November Projects
Mrs. VanHook and Mrs. Jervis’ 5th grade classes went on a fieldtrip to Kentucky’s State Capitol in Frankfort on November 17, 2016. There they visited the Old Capitol building, the Kentucky History Museum, and the New Capitol. The students were able to not only see and touch real live artifacts from Kentucky’s History but were able to participate in reenactments of events in our legislative branch of government. The fieldtrip was not only enjoyable but extremely educational.

Some of our Community Outreach members met Mrs. Monica Jones at the homeless shelter Saturday, October 1st and worked for over an hour and a half, never looking up, helping carry in donated items and organizing the items in the donation room. These kids are amazing, giving up some of their precious Saturday time to help others in the community. We should all be very proud, they are great ambassadors for our school!

East Bernstadt GEAR UP Week September 19th-23rd College gear day Sept. 20th: all students and staff wore college attire representing favorite colleges Career day Sept. 21st: all students were encouraged to dress up as the career they wanted to pursue Throughout the week all K-8 students completed various college and career activities.
